Hey, Mr. DJ! It’s time to put a “record” on and dance the night way. And while you definitely want to Celebrate good times, c’mon, to Party like it’s 1999 is so 13 years ago.

But thanks to iTunes, iPods, and pretty much i-Anything, you can be your own DJ. So this New Year’s Eve get ready to give your playlist a shuffle with some of these fresh beats!

Earworms

Don’t worry. It’s not as bad as it sounds. Every year Merriam-Webster releases a list of new words being added to its Collegiate Dictionary. I’d like to congratulate “earworm” — a song or melody that keeps repeating in one’s mind — for making the cut.

Try giving one of these Top Five songs of 2012* one last chance for a spotlight dance before 2013 crowns the next crop of earworms:

  • Glad You Came by The Wanted
  • Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye
  • We Are Young by Fun. Featuring Janelle Monae
  • Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen
  • Lights by Ellie Goulding

* As compiled by American Top 40 with Ryan Seacrest

Round out your playlist with some eclectic tunes:

  • Crazy by Alanis Morrisette from The Devil Wears Prada soundtrack
  • Dancing in the Streets by Martha Reeves & the Vandellas (Don’t YOU forget The Motor City!)
  • Don’t Dream it’s Over by Crowded House
  • Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey or your favorite cover version
  • Everybody Have Fun Tonight by Wang Chung
  • Hot Hot Hot by Bina Mistry from the Bend It Like Beckham soundtrack
  • It Had Better Be Tonight by Michael Bublé
  • Love, Loss, Hope by Repeat by Carbon Leaf
  • Party in the USA by Miley Cyrus
  • Right Here, Right Now by Jesus Jones
  • Save the Last Dance for Me by Michael Bublé
  • Something About the Way You Look Tonight by Elton John
  • They Way You Look Tonight/You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile by Glee
  • This is Your Night by Amber
  • Tonight, Tonight by Hot Chelle Rae
  • What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve? by Harry Connick, Jr.

Right before Midnight: The Final Countdown by Europe

Auld Lang Syne Alternatives

The clock strikes midnight and everyone bursts into song: Should auld acquaintance be forgot… da-da-da-da-da-da-umm… How does the rest of the song go?

While Auld Lang Syne may be the traditional way to ring in the New Year, it certainly isn’t very peppy. So why not sing a different tune to say hello to 2013? Here are my suggestions for merry melodies that inspire hope for the year ahead:

  • A Whole New World by Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle from the Aladdin soundtrack
  • Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive by Paul McCartney
  • The Best is Yet to Come by Michael Bublé
  • Better Days by Goo Goo Dolls
  • Don’t Worry Be Happy by Bobby McFerrin
  • Get Happy/Happy Days Are Here Again by Barbara Streisand/Judy Garland
  • Good Life by OneRepublic
  • Happy Days –from, ya know, the TV show
  • The Lucky Ones by Brendan James
  • Kiss the Girl by The Little Mermaid
  • My Wish by Rascal Flatts
  • Steal My Kisses by Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals
  • What a Wonderful World by Eva Cassidy

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
